Even though their season opener is just days away, Bill Belichick is still doing his due diligence and looking for ways to improve the Patriots' roster.
Reports surfaced Tuesday that the Pats worked out quarterback Mike Kafka and will work out tight end Kellen Winslow. New England made a couple of official roster moves, though, signing running back Lex Hilliard and releasing offensive lineman Matt Tennant.
Hilliard has played the last three seasons with the Dolphins, rushing for 130 yards and two touchdowns on 39 total carries. The 28-year-old was selected by Miami in the sixth round of the 2008 draft.
Tennant, 25, was claimed off waivers by the Patriots from the Saints on Saturday. New Orleans, of course, worked out with New England at Gillette Stadium this offseason. Tennant appeared in 28 games with the Saints over the last two seasons after getting drafted in the fifth round of the 2010 draft out of Boston College.
