Red Sox Call Up Chris Carpenter, the Main Piece From Theo Epstein DealWith the bullpen worn down, the Red Sox have added another arm.

The team has promoted pitcher Chris Carpenter — who came to the Red Sox as compensation for allowing former general manager Theo Epstein to go to Chicago — from Triple-A on Monday to join the club in Seattle.

The move will be the culmination of a rollercoaster season for Carpenter, who was shipped to the Red Sox during spring training. Shortly after being dealt, the 26-year-old needed surgery to remove bone spurs in his throwing elbow.

The Red Sox finally activated Carpenter off the disabled list July 31 and optioned him to Pawtucket. He's thrived in 16 appearances for the PawSox, posting a 1-0 record with a 1.15 ERA and four saves. He overpowered opposing hitters in relief work, racking up 17 strikeouts in 15 2/3 innings.

Last season, Carpenter also performed well in his first career stint in the big leagues. With the Cubs, he tallied eight strikeouts, seven walks and a 2.79 ERA in 9 2/3 innings over 10 outings.
