The Washington Nationals have a lot going for them right now. Between
leading the National League East by 7 1/2 games over the Braves
and having the best record in baseball at 85-52, the Nats need to
be considered one of the favorites to win the World Series in 2012.
Even with all of the above being true, doesn't it seem a little early to be planning a World Series parade? Well, that is exactly what the Washington D.C. Police Department is doing.
Police chief Cathy Lanier went on a local radio station to participate in the station's "Ask the Chief" program and the topic shifted to the Nationals and how the city would accommodate both the World Series games and the ensuing parade should the team get that far.
"It's going to be a big celebration for us here in Washington," she said. "We already have [the playoffs] sealed up. We know we're going."
Lanier goes on to discuss what it would take for the city to accommodate the games and what the contribution from the Lerner family — the Nationals' owners — would be. The cost to keep the city's Metro system open later would be approximately $29,500 per game, according to the radio station.
