DeMarlo Hale is slated to interview with the Red Sox on
Thursday.
After spending the 2012 season as the third-base coach for the Orioles, Hale is
eyeing the opportunity to return to the Red Sox, where he was once the bench
coach under Terry Francona.
As Red Sox
general manager Ben Cherington and company prepare to interview Hale, let’s
take a look at the 51-year-old’s credentials.
Managing Experience
— Served as manager for Red Sox’ Single-A Fort Lauderdale
affiliate in 1993
— Managed the organization’s Single-A Sarasota affiliate in
1994 and 1996
— Named Midwest League Manager of the Year in 1995 with
Single-A Michigan affiliate
— Selected as Baseball America’s Minor League Manager of the
Year in 1999 for first of two seasons with Double-A Trenton affiliate
— Compiled 491-471 record in seven seasons as skipper in Red
Sox farm system, with clubs reaching the postseason on three occasions
— Led Rangers’ Triple-A Oklahoma affiliate to second-place
finish in Pacific Coast League’s East Division in 2000 and 2001
— Promoted to Rangers’ first base/outfield coach in 2002
and held position until 2005
— Served as third base coach for Red Sox from 2006 to 2009,
including in 2007 World Series championship season
— Became Francona’s bench coach
in 2010 and 2011
— Returned to third base coaching duties with Orioles in
2012, the first year since 1997 that the franchise returned to the postseason
Playing Experience
— Selected by Red Sox in the 17th round of the 1983 Major
League Baseball draft
— Spent four years in the Red Sox farm system, starting in
Single-A Elmira in 1983 and ascending to Double-A New Britain in 1986
— Joined the Athletics’ farm system in 1987 as a first
baseman and outfielder for two seasons
