Felix Baumgartner Skydives Into Record Books, Breaks Sound Barrier in Process (Video)

Felix Baumgartner is a crazy human.

The daredevil shattered records and left people in awe on Sunday, skydiving from more than 24 miles above the earth and becoming the first person to ever break the sound barrier under his own power.

Baumgartner’s jump, which is both the highest and fastest in history, required him to wear a space suit, as he leaped from an altitude of 128,100 feet. During the jump, Baumgartner was in freefall for longer than four minutes, and he reached a maximum speed measured at 833.9 miles per hour — or Mach 1.24.

The plunge, which was pushed back to Sunday because of high winds, nearly ended in disaster, with Baumgartner momentarily spinning out of control. Fortunately, he was able to stop spinning, though, and he eventually landed smoothly on his feet.

“It was harder than I expected,” Baumgartner said after the jump. “Trust me, when you stand up there on top of the world, you become so humble. It’s not about breaking records any more. It’s not about getting scientific data. It’s all about coming home.”
