Roberto Clemente’s family wants his No. 21 retired across the MLB. Apparently commissioner Bud Selig doesn’t.
So, for the time being, the Clementes will be putting their fight on hold, according to TribLive.com.
“It’s become pretty clear to us this commissioner doesn’t want anything to do with it, to be perfectly honest,” Roberto Clemente Jr. said on Sunday at PNC Park, where there was a pregame ceremony to commemorate the Hall of Famer’s 3,000th hit 40 years ago. “That just means we’re going to have to wait until there’s a new commissioner. And we will.
“My dad was just the 11th player to 3,000 hits, and he was the first Latin American,” he added. “We’re all very proud of that as well as everything that he accomplished as a man. And his legend is only growing. It’s not going anywhere.”
