With the Athletics on the brink of elimination against
the Tigers in the ninth inning, Smith ripped a two-run double off Detroit
closer Jose Valverde to deadlock the game before Coco Crisp delivered the
game-winning run.

But after the dramatic game, it was Smith who turned into
a trending topic on Twitter. Turns out, the Athletics slugger had no clue about
Twitter and the ramifications of trending worldwide.

Oakland pitcher Brandon McCarthy – the ultimate Twitter
goofball — aired out Smith's naivety, showing a text message between the two
where Smith asks if trending was a big deal.
