Chan Gailey can rest easy — he'll have a job in Buffalo next season.
Bills general manager Buddy Nix confirmed that Buffalo's head coach has a year or more of job security despite starting the season 3-4. The Bills had high hopes coming into the season after signing defensive ends Mario Williams and Mark Anderson, but if anything, Buffalo's defensive line has been even worse than it was last season.
"Yeah, and I hope I can put that to rest,” Nix told the Buffalo News about whether Gailey's job was in jeopardy. "The age-old thing — and
they've done it around here for years — is to start over about every
three years. What that does is make damn sure you don't make it."
Nix said that drafting a quarterback will be a priority during the offseason but made sure not to insult starting quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick in the process.
"The two guys we got behind Fitz (Tyler Thigpen and Tarvaris Jackson) right now are both up this year," Nix
said. "And we don't
have a young guy to develop or to give competition at that position. You
can read into that. It's not like we're trying to replace somebody."
This is Gailey's third season with the Bills. The team went 4-12 in his first season and 6-10 last year.
