Boxing has lost a legend.

On Thursday, Puerto Rican doctors declared Hector “Macho” Camacho, the former title holder in three different weight classes, brain dead, as reported by The Associated Press. Camacho was shot in the face on Tuesday while sitting in a car outside a bar in his home country.

Camacho remains on life support as two of his aunts requested more time with him before his family makes the difficult decision. The former boxer, now 50, was known to have numerous legal, drug and alcohol-related problems throughout his career, and cocaine was found in the car in which him and a friend were shot on Tuesday.

Doctors initially thought Camacho would survive, but maintaining blood flow to his brain — which had been interrupted by the bullet which tore through several arteries — proved complicated. Camacho’s father reportedly wanted his son taken off life support and his organs donated, but the family agreed to more time and most left the hospital without commenting.

“I’m a person of a lot of faith, and I believe in miracles, but science has spoken,” said Aida Camacho, one of the fighter’s aunts.
