The Houston Rockets will be without their head coach for an undisclosed amount of time.

Kevin McHale is taking a leave of absence effective immediately from the Rockets to attend a “personal family matter.” McHale is heading back to his home in Minnesota and no date has been set for his return.

Assistant coach Kelvin Sampson will take over for the Boston Celtics-legend while he’s away. The Rockets are 2-3 on the season so far and play the Pistons in Houston on Saturday night.

“Kevin is a devoted family man who is needed back home in Minnesota at the moment,” said Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey. “The Rockets organization will keep Kevin and his family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
