The Mets are listening to trade inquiries regarding National League Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey, and it sure sounds like they’re looking for a lot.
If the Mets elect to trade their ace, the New York Daily News reports the organization would be seeking a substantial return, including high-end prospects or viable major leaguers.
“[They] would want a monster package for [R.A.] Dickey, and if they don’t get it, probably would not trade him,” a source told the Daily News. “They aren’t approaching teams on this, but they’re letting teams come to them.”
Dickey was the feel-good story of the 2012 season, winning the prestigious pitching award after compiling a 20-6 record with a 2.73 ERA and a league-leading 230 strikeouts.
Both sides are still working on a possible extension, with Dickey set to make $5 million this upcoming season. The Daily News reported that the 38-year-old could be eyeing White Sox pitcher Jake Peavy‘s two-year, $29 million deal as a barometer.
It could take until the winter meetings — which take place Dec. 3 to Dec. 6 in Nashville — for the Mets to ultimately decide how to proceed with Dickey’s future in the organization.
Given that Dickey is 38, it could be difficult for the Mets to acquire the monster package they desire. Knuckleballers, however, tend to have a longer shelf life in the majors. Former Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, for instance, managed to pitch until he was 45 years old.
