Jon Morosi of FOXSports.com is reporting the Red Sox have “checked in on” him, although he wouldn’t be ready to pitch until late May or June.
A two-time All-Star, Soria is two years removed from his last All-Star season as closer for the Royals. That season, he compiled a 1-2 record with a 1.78 ERA and logged a career-high 43 saves.
Through five seasons –– all with Kansas City –– Soria has posted a 13-15 record with 2.40 ERA and racked up 341 strikeouts. He blossomed under former Red Sox pitching coach Bob McClure.
Soria’s season came to a halt last spring training when he sensed pain in his right elbow. It resulted in the second Tommy John surgery of his career, with the first taking place back in 2003.
The Royals declined his $8 million option in the offseason, but Soria has expressed a desire to stay with the club. But if it doesn’t happen, the right-hander could be a candidate to bolster Boston’s bullpen.
