The college realignment game of musical chairs is about to start again and this time, it’s the Big Ten drawing first blood.
The University of Maryland’s board of regents voted unanimously on Monday to leave the ACC for the land of legends and leaders, according to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy. It’s likely that Rutgers will follow suit in the near future, leaving the Big East and giving the Big Ten its fourteenth team.
Maryland will need to pay the ACC a $50 million exit fee in order to leave, while Rutgers will have to shell out $10 million after giving its conference 27 months notice. The move comes just as the ACC is preparing to add Syracuse and Pitt in 2013, and it will likely set off another round of realignment madness.
