Sidney Crosby hasn’t fled overseas to play during the NHL lockout, but as the work stoppage drags on, the biggest name in hockey says that he’s thinking about it more and more.
“It’s a lot more possible right now,” Crosby told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette after a player-organized workout on Monday. “I probably hadn’t thought about it quite as much as I have the past few days.
“It’s definitely been something … with the way things are looking now, it’s not looking too good.”
Crosby mentioned that his agent has spoken with teams in Russia and Switzerland so far, but could consider other countries as well. However, one hurdle that has been brought up when discussing the possibility of Sid the Kid playing abroad is the astronomical insurance policy that he would need to take out against his NHL contract in case of an injury.
The 25-year-old star has been highly visible during the lockout negotiations between the players’ union and the owners, but he admits that it is beginning to become a grind.
“This whole process, it wears on you a little bit,” Crosby said. “This isn’t what we grew up thinking hockey is about.”
