Terry Bradshaw, Reggie BushTerry Bradshaw chose the wrong reference at the wrong time.

On Monday, Bradshaw apologized for comments he made during Fox’s halftime show when he said Reggie Bush was running “like he was chasing that bucket of chicken.” Bradshaw’s comment was referencing fellow-analyst Jimmy Johnson, who eats fried chicken every Sunday.

Bradshaw told USA Today Sports that he is “so sorry if I hurt anybody and I’m shocked I’m in this position.”

“I can’t defend myself,” said Bradshaw. “I’ve never been in a situation like this. I don’t know how to react, except to apologize for something I didn’t know I said. I’ve been upset today. It’s not me. I’m shocked.”

Bradshaw said that he didn’t know he had said “he,” in reference to Bush, rather than “you,” in reference to Johnson. Bradshaw said he didn’t hear about the controversy until Monday morning, when Fox called him and played him the tape of his comments.

Johnson backed up Bradshaw’s story on Twitter.
