On Monday night, both President Barack Obama and his challenger, Republican candidate Mitt Romney, appeared on Monday Night Football to talk sports.
Romney jokingly took credit for the Patriots winning two Super Bowls and the Red Sox winning a World Series while he was the governor of Massachusetts, while Obama noted that athletes and politicians often have to deal with similar challenges since they are both in the public eye.
The line between sports and politics has often been blurred, from players voicing their political opinions to athletes moving on to public office after their playing days end. It’s not a stretch to think that a leader on the field could also unite people off it, and some of sports’ biggest names are often called on (not so jokingly) to take their talents to the White House.
Boston has a few stars who would make sense running for office, the most obvious being Bruins goalkeeper Tim Thomas, who has been outspoken about his political beliefs before.
But plenty of local fans would also love to see Tom Brady‘s calming presence and diplomatic responses on the campaign trail, or maybe some of Kevin Garnett‘s fired-up vitriol telling America how it is. Then again, the hometown favorite may just be David Ortiz, who could probably get free dinners and votes for the rest of his life thanks to what he’s done for Red Sox Nation.
