Michael Strahan Has No Desire to Fix Teeth, Says ‘I Don’t Want to Be Perfect’

Michael Strahan isn’t perfect. It’s OK, though. He doesn’t want to be.

Strahan, who has become as famous for his gap-toothed smile as he has for his illustrious football career, opened up to ELLE magazine about his chompers and explained why he never had any dental work done despite constantly being in the public eye.

“I was at the dentist having him do mock-ups. I thought about it, man … I was in my 20’s,” he told the magazine. “I was playing with the Giants. There’s so much pressure to be perfect. You can fix anything now. For me, I made the conscious effort to say, ‘This is who I am.’ I’m not perfect. I don’t want to be perfect. At this point, I don’t think my kids would recognize me without it.”

Strahan is perhaps even more prominent now than he was during his playing days, as he currently hosts Live! alongside Kelly Ripa. That — in addition to his football analyst gig and commercial appearances — wasn’t enough to sway his opinion on having work done, however.

Strahan also opened up about fatherhood during his interview with ELLE, and even had some advice for those boys thinking about pursuing his daughters.

“Stay away! No, I’m joking,” Strahan said. “Even though I’m not with their mother, it’s important for my kids to see adults in a committed and happy relationship. They need to see a strong relationship. You don’t have to settle.”

You also don’t have to settle when it comes to peer pressure. So while there might be some who think Strahan should have used his football riches to fix his teeth, the former Giants lineman is fine with the way he is — gap-toothed smile and all.

I think that Toronto series has turned into pretty much a joke. I think they started it hoping that we’d have a lot of fan support in Toronto. We have none.
