Major League Baseball’s favorite Twitter account is taking its act to Arizona.
Conventional wisdom says second-tier pitchers (i.e. anyone who isn’t Zack Greinke) were waiting around for Greinke to sign to determine the market for their services. Well, not Brandon McCarthy, apparently.
According to multiple reports and as first reported by Arizona talk radio host John Gambadoro, McCarthy has signed a two-year deal with the Diamondbacks for about $15 million. McCarthy was at the top of many team’s Christmas wish lists — including the Red Sox — but his injury history likely kept his market from exploding.
McCarthy was having a second consecutive stellar season for the Oakland Athletics in 2012 when he was hit by a line drive off the bat of the Angels’ Erick Aybar, ending his season prematurely. McCarthy was 17-15 with a 3.29 ERA in 43 starts over the last two seasons.
McCarthy has also become well-known around baseball for his Twitter persona, where he often cracks jokes and trades sarcastic barbs with his wife.
