Maybe money really does grow on trees.
That seems like the only logical explanation for the Dodgers’ recent spending spree, and apparently it might not be over yet. According to CBSSports.com’s Danny Knobler, the Dodgers have discussed both infielder Kevin Youkilis and starter Anibal Sanchez, two players who remain on the open market.
The Dodgers spent nearly $200 million over the weekend — inking Zack Greinke to a six-year, $147 million deal and Japanese hurler Hyun-jin Ryu to a six-year, $36 million contract. Add that to the hefty amount of cash Los Angeles already shelled out in August to acquire Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto from Boston, and it’s clear Magic Johnson and Co. are making it rain out in Cali.
Signing Youkilis or Sanchez (especially) would require even more spending by the Dodgers. Youkilis has reportedly been offered a one-year, $12 million contract by the Yankees, and the Indians have also shown interest, although it’s unclear how signing Mark Reynolds impacts Cleveland’s plans. Sanchez, meanwhile, could reportedly command a contract worth as much as $90 million.
According to Knobler, the Dodgers have made pitchers Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang available, and either could be dealt, which could potentially open the door for Sanchez. Teams have been reluctant to give Sanchez the big deal he’s seeking, but one more trip to the Money Oak could mean even more spending for the Dodgers.
