The chips are beginning to fall on Mark Sanchez‘s wildly disappointing 2012 season.
The Jets will attempt to trade Sanchez after the 2012 season, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News. Sanchez is guaranteed $8.25 million next season, so New York would likely have to eat at least $5 million of his salary, since no team would be willing to pay the full amount. The Jets will already be paying Sanchez’s bonuses from his rookie deal and last offseason’s contract extension, which add up to $8.9 million.
On top of eating most of Sanchez’s guaranteed money, they can’t expect to get much in return for their former No. 5 overall pick. New York traded up with the Buccaneers in the 2009 NFL draft to pick Sanchez.
The Buccaneers took Josh Freeman with one of the picks they received from the Jets. Freeman has thrown for 3,471 yards, 25 touchdowns and 12 interceptions this season. He also hasn’t buttfumbled or been benched for Greg McElroy.
