As the team currently stands, Jose Iglesias is on track to be the Red Sox’ opening day starting shortstop, but that could still change.
The Red Sox have shown interest in Marlins shortstop Yunel Escobar, according to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports. It was reported on Monday that the Marlins are shopping Escobar, after acquiring him from the Blue Jays in a deal that sent Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Jose Reyes, John Buck and Emilio Bonafacio to the Blue Jays.
Escobar, who’s due to make $4 million in 2013, is among Miami’s highest paid players. Escobar was suspended for three games last season for writing a Spanish gay slur on his eye black. New Red Sox manager John Farrell has a history with Escobar, having coached him for two years in Toronto.
Escobar is a career .282 hitter with a .743 OPS. His best season came in 2009 with the Braves when he hit 14 home runs while driving in 76 runs. He hit .299 that season with a .812 OPS.
