Report: Stephen Drew Agrees to One-Year, $9.5 Million Contract With Red Sox

The Red Sox are once again tapping into the Drew family pipeline.

The Sox have agreed to a one-year deal with shortstop Stephen Drew, according to CBSSports.com’s Jon Heyman. The deal is reportedly worth $9.5 million.

The 29-year-old becomes the second member of the Drew family to lace up the cleats for the Red Sox in recent years, as his older brother, J.D., played five seasons with Boston from 2007-11.

Drew arrives to the Red Sox after having spent his 2012 season split between Arizona and Oakland. He hit .223 with seven home runs and 28 RBIs in 287 at-bats over 79 total games. Drew, who spent his first six-plus seasons with the Diamondbacks, enjoyed his best season in 2008, when he hit .291 with 21 home runs and 67 RBIs.

The plan is likely to use Drew as a stopgap while Jose Iglesias and Xander Bogaerts further develop. Iglesias, of course, is known for his defensive prowess, but has failed to improve offensively. Bogaerts, meanwhile, enjoyed a solid season split between High-A Salem and Double-A Portland last year, and remains one of the organization’s top prospects.

The Drew signing continues what has been a busy offseason for the Red Sox, who have also agreed to deals with Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Ryan Dempster,and Koji Uehara on the open market.
