Report: Stephen Drew, Alex Gonzalez on Red Sox’ Radar, But Jose Iglesias Likely to Get First Shot at Shortstop

Alex GonzalezThe Red Sox may already have their 2013 starting shortstop in Jose Iglesias, but that won’t stop them from still checking the market.

Boston has “checked in” on Stephen Drew and Alex Gonzalez, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

Both players have ties to the Red Sox. Gonzalez played for Boston in 2006 and 2009. He played just 24 games for the Brewers last season, hitting .256 with four home runs and 15 RBIs after he tore his ACL in May. He struggled in his last full season, putting up just a .642 OPS with Atlanta in 2011.

Drew’s brother, J.D., of course played with the Red Sox from 2007 to 2011 before quietly retiring. Drew struggled in 2012, batting just .223 with a .657 OPS. Drew could be a decent buy-low option, as he’s just two years removed from an impressive .810 OPS season in 2010 with the Diamondbacks.
