Bruins fans who don’t know about Bobby Robins got a pleasant surprise if they attended Tuesday night’s scrimmage or caught the live stream online at the Bruins’ website.

Robins, a self-described hard-nose scrapper, has been dropping his gloves all year in the AHL with the Providence Bruins, and he was just as edgy on Tuesday night during the P-Bruins’ scrimmage with the real B’s.

After minding his p’s and q’s in the first period, Robins got under the skin of captain Zdeno Chara when he took a couple of extra shots at a puck underneath goalie Tuukka Rask after the whistle. Chara gave the young Robins (well, younger, as Robins is 31) a shove and a stern talking-to, but he wasn’t alone. One of the NHL’s best enforcers, Shawn Thornton also got in on the action, grabbing Robins and giving him an earful as well.

That carried over into the third period when Adam McQuaid took exception to what he thought was some unnecessary after-the-whistle activity from Providence’s Lane MacDermid. McQuad shoved MacDermid a couple of times, at which point Robins felt the need to step in. He came to the defense of his teammate, and before long, the gloves were gone and the fists were flying.

Robins has logged more than 20 fighting majors already this season, and he showed that he was in midseason form in the spirited scrap with McQuaid.
