Brendan Shanahan has spoken for the first time this season, and that’s not good news for Brayden Schenn and the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Flyers forward was suspended one game Wednesday for his hit on New Jersey’s Anton Volchenkov in the Devils’ 3-0 win over the winless Flyers on Tuesday night.

Shanahan explained that the supplemental discipline comes from the fact that Schenn charged Volchenkov, and then launched himself into the air to deliver the hit. The act of launching himself also led Schenn to make contact with Volchenkov’s head.

Schenn will only get one game, as he’s not a repeat offender and Volchenkov didn’t suffer an injury on the play. The one-game ban will cost Schenn more than $4,700.
