Northern Illinois may have lost to Florida State in the Orange Bowl 31-10, but at halftime on Saturday afternoon, the NIU basketball team hadn’t even put up half of what their football classmates did.
Earlier this season, Northern Illinois broke the NCAA Division I record for fewest points in a first half, scoring only five against Dayton on Dec. 5. Saturday, they broke their own record, recording only four in the first half.
Taking on Eastern Michigan, the Huskies shot a shocking 1-of-31 from the field in the first 20 minutes. After Northern’s Badel Sader made a jumper one minute into the game, the Huskies went on to miss 29 straight.
NIU’s 3.2 percent field goal percentage in the first half also broke a record previously set by Savannah State in 2008 when the Tigers shot a miserable 4.8 percent. The record-breaking doesn’t stop there, though, as the Huskies finished the game with a 13.1 percent field goal percentage, capturing another historic feat.
The Huskies eventually found their way to double digits, but the barnburner ended with NIU falling 42-25.
