Report: Christian Ponder’s Teammates Haven’t Been Told if Elbow Bursitis Will Keep Quarterback From Playing

Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder has been dealing with some elbow pain that has marked him as “questionable” on the injury report and could keep him from playing against Green Bay in Saturday night’s NFC wild card game.

What’s strange about the injury scenario, though, is that the Vikings are apparently making this such a wait-and-see situation that not even the players know who their starting quarterback will be, with the game just hours away.

Tom Pelissero of ESPN says Ponder has elbow bursitis that, while not uncommon, may lead to the quarterback’s arm being drained.

Jay Glazer of FOX says that the Vikings are still trying to decide whether Ponder or backup quarterback Joe Webb will start.

Glazer said the coaching staff went with Webb and Ponder to Lambeau Field ahead of time to check out the conditions and decide. Other reports have indicated that Ponder will get further treatment once there.

Lambeau is typically a pretty chilly place, and considering how cold it’s been in recent weeks, taking a sore elbow into that kind of weather could be a bad idea. But Ponder is the guy who’s been leading the Vikings all season, so Minnesota has a big decision to make in the next few hours.
