With the upcoming season not looking very bright to start with, Alex Rodriguez‘s offseason just got more complicated.
Major League Baseball and the Drug Enforcement Administration are investigating a man based in the Miami area who has had connections with Rodriguez, the Daily News reports. The man, named Anthony Bosch, has worked with Rodriguez on nutrition and training, and the organizations are looking into “possible links to performance-enhancing drugs,” according to the Daily News.
Bosch was also involved with Manny Ramirez and was “under scrutiny from MLB and the DEA in 2009” after Ramirez was suspended 50 games for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug use policies. Bosch has received attention from authorities before in connection to him allegedly supplying players with banned substances, the Daily News said.
The investigation comes at a time when Major League Baseball is making moves to catch more performance-enhancing drugs with its testing methods, including hard-to-detect gels or human growth hormone. While Rodriguez has admitted to limited use of banned substances, some suspect that his violations extend far beyond what he has confessed to.
Rodriguez has already faced several hurdles this offseason. He had surgery this month to repair damage in his hip, and Yankees general manager Brian Cashman made waves this week when he said Rodriguez could miss the entire season. Cashman later clarified that what he meant was that it was a possibility that Rodriguez could miss the whole season, not that it was likely.
