After weeks of waiting, it appears that the Mike Napoli saga is about to come to a close.
The Red Sox and Napoli have agreed to terms on a one-year deal, according to WEEI.com’s Rob Bradford. According to Bradford’s source, the deal is for one year without any team, player or vesting options, although there are incentives that could net Napoli $13 million if he avoids the disabled list with any hip troubles.
Originally, it was reported that the team had signed the first baseman/catcher to a three-year deal worth $39 million. However, apparent issues on a physical prevented the Red Sox from making the deal official, and the two sides then reopened negotiations.
Last season, Napoli played just 103 games for the Rangers while batting .227. While he has spent much of his career as a catcher, Napoli is expected to start at first base for the Red Sox and play most of the time in the infield for the Sox.
