When news first broke at the winter meetings that Mike Napoli had reportedly agreed to a deal with the Red Sox, it looked as if the veteran slugger was in line to receive $39 million over three years. After a hip issue was detected during his physical, though, the 31-year-old was forced to settle for a one-year contract.
The Red Sox officially announced on Tuesday that they have signed Napoli to a one-year pact, and while the terms of the deal were not disclosed, reports have indicated that the first baseman will earn $5 million, with the potential to earn up to $13 million, based on incentives.
It was initially unclear what exactly those incentives are, but WEEI.com’s Alex Speier has reportedly obtained information regarding such.
Speier reports that Napoli’s contract includes the following incentives that could increase the total value of the contract to $13 million in 2013.
Active roster bonuses
$500,000 each for 30, 60, 90, 120 days on the active roster
Plate appearance bonuses
$500,000 each for 300, 325, 350, 375 plate appearances
$1 million each for 400, 475, 550, 625 plate appearances
Catch-all bonus
If Napoli is active for a minimum of 165 days in 2013, he will get the full $8 million in incentives for a total of $13 million
