The Celtics are at a crossroads.
January started off so well for Boston, with the squad winning six consecutive games, including hard-fought victories over Indiana, New York and Houston. After some early-season treading of water, the team looked to have turned a corner and seemed poised to reestablish itself as one of the Eastern Conference’s powers along with Miami.
Then the floor fell out from under the C’s.
Since that winning streak, Boston has rattled off a four-game losing streak, and as solid as they looked to begin January, they’ve looked equally hapless to close it. After a Sunday loss to the Pistons Doc Rivers seemed to have reached a breaking point — and that was before Tuesday’s defeat at the hands of the lowly Cavaliers.
So while Rajon Rondo has displayed his typical dominance — albeit with more personality issues, too — and Jared Sullinger has been a rookie revelation, the rest of the team has lacked consistency, and if things don’t turn around changes could be coming. But while the Big Three era may be over with the offseason departure of Ray Allen, big things were still expected of this team. And with that failure to live up to those expectations and ever-climbing ages of stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, the organization probably needs to ask some hard questions.
So, we pose this question to you: Has the Celtics’ championship window closed? Is it time to start over and rebuild?
