The San Francisco 49ers haven’t done the best job of promoting gay rights while down in New Orleans for the Super Bowl.
First, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga and linebacker Ahmad Brooks didn’t recall making a gay rights “It Gets Better” advertisement. When showed the commercial, they told the USA Today they had no idea it was to support LGBT youths, and instead thought it was just about general bullying.
In the ad, both players never mention any LGBT-related terms, so it’s entirely possible they didn’t know what the video shoot was for. The 49ers were praised at the time for being the first NFL team to shoot an “It Gets Better” ad.
Cornerback Chris Culliver made controversial statements saying he wouldn’t welcome a gay player into the locker room during Super Bowl week. He since apologized for the comments saying that’s “not what’s in my heart.”
Due to these two instances, “It Gets Better” has pulled the 49ers’ ad from their website.
