This week, his divorce with his wife, Tawanna Iverson, became final. His ex-wife has legal and physical custody over their five children and, to make matters worse, an Atlanta judge brought up Iverson’s many shortcomings as a father in the divorce decree.
In the decree, first posted by TMZ.com, the judge referred to Iverson as a “hindrance” to his children’s growth and mentioned Iverson’s problems with alcohol.
“[Iverson] does not know how to manage the children; has little interest in learning to manage the children and has actually, at times, been a hindrance to their spiritual and emotional growth and development.
“For example, he has refused to attend to an obvious and serious alcohol problem, which has caused him to do inappropriate things in the presence of the children while impaired.
“He has left the children alone without supervision. He has left his young daughters in a hotel room with men who are unknown to the mother.”
Iverson has visitation rights, under several conditions, including staying away from alcohol for 18 months and attending AA meetings. Furthermore, the former NBA All-Star can’t have any alcohol within 24 hours of seeing his children. That is in effect until all of his children turn 18.
Iverson, who has also had issues on the floor, is still attempting to revive his playing career — most recently being offered to play for the Dallas Mavericks’ NBA Developmental League team.
