Montreal CanadiensThe Montreal Canadiens were not expected to be very good this year. They certainly weren’t expected to be at the top of the conference standings at the quarter-point of the season.

Yet, that’s exactly where the Habs find themselves on Feb. 20, after beating the New York Rangers to run their winning streak to five games.

While the Bruins still have a few games in hand on their Canadian rivals, it is becoming increasingly clear that Montreal is a team that cannot be overlooked in the Northeast Division.

NESN.com’s Mike Cole joined NESN Nation’s Dan Duquette on the podcast Wednesday to discuss the Canadiens’ surprising success, and whether or not it will be enough to keep the Habs in the hunt all season long. The two also touched on the Blackhawks and their record-setting run, how the NHL can fix its shootout “problem” and much more.
