Report: Dwayne Bowe’s Track Record Scaring Off Some Teams in Free-Agent Market

Dwayne BoweDwayne Bowe‘s measurements alone — he’s 6-foot-2, 220 pounds and runs a 4.5 40-yard dash — should frighten NFL defenders, and his track record through six NFL seasons supports that fear. But Bowe also may be scaring off interested NFL teams.

Bowe has been extremely productive during his NFL career, averaging nearly 70 catches, 950 yards and seven touchdowns in six seasons with the Chiefs. His on-field production is not the issue. Instead, it’s Bowe’s “baggage” that is scaring off interested teams, according to Sports Illustrated’s Peter King.

“I am scared to death of Dwayne Bowe,” one NFL scout told King recently. “Like him a lot, but not sure what we’d be buying if we signed him. Too much baggage.”

While proving to be a threat on the outside, Bowe has also endured his fair share of problems while in Kansas City. On the field, Bowe has battled a bad case of the drops and struggled with some fluctuating weight problems. His career has also included a four-game suspension for a positive performance-enhancing drug test (2009) and numerous confrontations with his coaches, which raise red flags about his character.

Even with all the questions and uncertainty, Bowe is still a talented, productive receiver with all the makings of a true No. 1 on the outside. Some NFL executives may fall in line with the thinking of King’s anonymous scout, but plenty of teams will no doubt look past the markers and take a chance on him anyway.
