Another Red Sox outfielder will be unavailable for the start of spring training.
According to The Boston Globe’s Nick Cafardo, manager John Farrell said that minor leaguer Alex Hassan will not be ready for the start of camp because of a stress fracture in his left foot.
This comes on the heels of the recent news that outfielder Ryan Kalish will miss a big chunk of the season after undergoing shoulder surgery. Hassan didn’t figure to be as much a part of Boston’s 2013 plans as Kalish, but the Milton, Mass., native could find himself on the major league roster at some point later in the season if injuries happen to strike.
Hassan, a 20th-round draft pick out of Duke in 2009, spent his entire 2012 campaign with Triple-A Pawtucket. The 24-year-old hit .256 with seven home runs and 46 RBIs in 94 games. SoxProspects.com ranks Hassan as the organization’s 42nd-ranked prospect, just ahead of catcher Dan Butler and just below knuckleballer Steven Wright.
