Robert Griffin IIIRobert Griffin III‘s promise to be “all in for Week 1” may not be completely far-fetched after all.

The Redskins quarterback, who suffered season-ending tears to the anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments in his right knee during Washington’s playoff loss to Seattle on Jan. 6, is reportedly “way ahead of schedule” in his recovery efforts, according to Dr. James Andrews.

“We have him well on his way,” Andrews told the NFL Network on Friday. “His recovery is way ahead of schedule so far. We don’t have to do much but try to hold him back, if you want to know the truth. Our whole mode for him though is to do what is best for his career, not necessarily what is best for the first game next season. So all of that has to be put on hold and let him get well.”

A torn ACL has typically been known to keep an athlete sidelined for up to a year, but the near-miraculous recovery of Vikings running back Adrian Peterson last season has diminished the magnitude of the injury in the eyes of many, and reduced the expected rehabilitation period.

The Redskins have said that they believe Griffin will be ready to return in time for opening day on Sept. 8, just under eight months after his knee surgery. Adidas has also embraced the idea, promoting RG3 with its “All in for Week 1” slogan, but the quarterback has said he views the September return date as a goal, not a promise.
