Gonzalez maintained his position to retire throughout the 2012 season, but that was before the Falcons came just minutes away from a trip to the Super Bowl. Now, as the offseason grows on, Gonzalez appears to be entertaining the idea of a return, ESPN’s Ed Werder reported during SportsCenter on Tuesday.
According to Werder, a player close to Gonzalez said of his pending decision, “I think if the circumstances are right, Tony will come back.”
The rumors about Gonzalez’s potential return have swirled all offseason. He will turn 37 later this month, but his age hasn’t had any impact on his production. Gonzalez still posted stellar numbers, catching 93 passes and eight touchdowns for the Falcons on the year while receiving his 13th Pro Bowl invitation.
Gonzalez may not be able to maintain that same level of production too much longer, but he’s still one of the best tight ends in football. And after earning his first postseason victory this year, and his first real shot at the Super Bowl, the 15-year veteran could very well be swayed into one last run. The Falcons would definitely be better off with him.
