Wes Welker‘s tenure in New England may not be over.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport wrote on Monday that he (and Albert Breer) heard that they can’t rule out a long-term extension for the slot receiver.
“The Patriots won’t apply the franchise tag to him, we know that. And yet … Albert Breer and I have both heard that we can’t rule out a long-term extension being reached before Welker hits free agency,” Rapoport writes.
“The door is still open for him to get his money and retire a Patriot,” he adds. “What would a deal look like? In my mind — just trying to gain an understanding of the market — if Welker can get a five-year deal worth more than $8 million per year, that’d be impressive.”
Welker caught 118 passes in 2012 for 1,354 yards and six touchdowns. In six years with the Pats he has 672 receptions and 7,459 yards to go with 37 TDs, not to mention nearly 1,200 punt return yards.
