It’s rare for an NFL draft prospect to forego the idea of a pro career and decide to pursue a path in something non-football related. But that’s exactly what Nick Florence plans to do.
The Baylor quarterback announced on Thursday that he plans to finish up graduate school rather than take a shot at playing in the NFL.
“I’ve decided to hang up my cleats and finish my master’s in December,” Florence told the Waco Tribune. “My wife and I have spent the last 1 1/2 months talking about it, and it all came down to what we wanted in life, and it didn’t include playing football.”
Florence set a team record in 2012 with 4,309 passing yards. He threw for 10 touchdowns and ran for 568 yards and 10 touchdowns. Florence led the Bears to a 8-5 record last season.
The Baylor signal caller will finish up his MBA in December. He hopes to go into something involving sports and business.
Florence had the tough task of taking over for Robert Griffin III. Griffin was drafted No. 2 overall by the Washington Redskins after leading Baylor to a 10-3 record.
Florence’s last game was a 49-26 win over UCLA in the Holiday Bowl. He threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns while adding 37 yards and one score on the ground.
