Jarome Iginla appeared to be headed to Boston to put on the Black and Gold. He’ll be wearing those same colors, but he’ll be doing so a few hundred miles south.
In an absolutely shocking turn of events, the Calgary Flames announced early Thursday morning (on the East Coast) that they had traded Iginla to the Penguins. The original report by TSN’s Aaron Ward (which was cited in multiple outlets, including this one) had Iginla heading to Boston, with a deal all but finalized.
“We had multiple teams that we were dealing with, had multiple offers,” Calgary general manager Jay Feaster told reporters after announcing the deal. “At end of the day, it’s a process of working with the player as well. The player had a no-trade, no-move and in this instance the deal that we consummated, this is where the player was prepared to wait for.”
The Flames received Kenneth Agostino and Ben Hanowski as well as a 2013 first-round pick from the Penguins in exchange for the future Hall of Famer.
