Jaromir Jagr, Ryane Clowe, Martin St. Louis Headline List of Potential Options for Bruins as Trade Deadline Approaches
The 2013 NHL trade deadline is approaching on April 3, but some shots have already been fired.
The Pittsburgh Penguins strengthened their already dominant roster by acquiring Brenden Morrow of the Dallas Stars, Douglas Murray of the San Jose Sharks and most recently Jarome Iginla of the Calgary Flames. While that bolsters the Penguins’ run for a Stanley Cup (they are now the 9-2 favorites), other contenders will be looking to answer as well. Here?s a look at the biggest names expected to be available come deadline day.
Considering the Stars moved Morrow, it?s a good guess to assume they aren?t done yet. They are 10th in the standings in the West and aren?t expected to have a very long playoff run — if they get there at all. Jaromir Jagr is the team?s leading scoring and is an excellent rental option. The Stars are apparently trying to sign him beyond this season but if they fail to do so, teams like the Bruins should be interested in his services.
Derek Roy is in a similar boat as his teammate Jagr: he plays for Dallas, offers a boost of offense and is a free agent at the end of the year. However, while some pundits suggest that the Stars are trying to re-sign Jagr, the same cannot be said for Roy. The latest reports suggest that teams like Ottawa, Boston and Anaheim are interested. Roy could provide a spark on each of their second lines.
The San Jose Sharks have been nosediving ever since they started the season 7-0-0, which is why they?ve already moved Murray and might continue to sell with Brent Burns and Dan Boyle. But the hottest name in the Sharks rumor mill is Ryane Clowe, who — when motivated — can be a reliable, scoring power forward. Teams like Montreal would love to get their hands on him and you can expect their 14-1 Stanley Cup odds to shorten if they do. Other options include Vancouver, Toronto and Boston.
The Tampa Bay Lightning have dropped to 13th in the Eastern Conference and their odds to win the Stanley cup are a whopping 75-1. They just fired head coach Guy Boucher and should be in full-on selling mode come Wednesday. Martin St. Louis could be an excellent offensive choice for buyers as he has 42 points this season, which puts him third in the NHL. While he?s still productive, the Lightning might look to unload the 37-year-old?s contract and start rebuilding. The Bruins and New York Rangers are deemed to be potential destinations.
