Stephen Drew was hoping to have a healthy spring after missing time to injury during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Unfortunately, some bad luck appears to have derailed that plan.
Drew was scratched from the Red Sox lineup Friday after experiencing “mild” concussion-like symptoms, as reported by NESN’s Jamie Erdahl in Fort Myers. He was replaced in the lineup by fellow shortstop Jose Iglesias.
Drew was hit in the head by a pitch on Thursday, likely leading to the symptoms. The 29-year-old signed a one-year, $9.5 million contract with the Red Sox this offseason and is penciled in as the team’s starting shortstop come Opening Day.
Stephen Drew is the younger brother of former Red Sox outfielder J.D. Drew, who was labelled as injury-prone during his time in Boston. Fans will certainly be holding their collective breath in hopes that label does not run in the family.
