Steve Davis, who led Oklahoma to back-to-back national championships in the mid-1970s, was killed Monday when a small plane he was traveling in crashed in South Bend, Ind.
The 60-year-old Davis never played in the NFL but started three seasons at quarterback for the Sooners from 1973-75, leaving school with a 32-1-1 record and winning the national title in both his junior and senior seasons. His records for consecutive starts and career wins stood for nearly 40 years until they were broken by Landry Jones last season.
Davis was the first quarterback to start in Norman under legendary Sooners couch Barry Switzer, who expressed his condolences via Twitter after hearing the news.
