Tony Romo’s Extension Seems Like Good Idea in Interim But Will Hamstring Cowboys in Long Term (Podcast)

Tony RomoThe Cowboys finally gave Tony Romo his due. But was it too much?

Romo agreed to a six-year, $108 million extension on Friday to stay as Dallas’ starting quarterback for theĀ foreseeableĀ future. The deal guarantees Romo $55 million, which seems like a little much for a soon-to-be 33-year-old quarterback with just one postseason victory.

The Cowboys get some cap relief from Romo’s new deal, but could be hamstrung by his lofty salary figure in the future. Plus, one playoff win in three years would indicate Romo may never bring a Super Bowl to Dallas.Ā That’s why NESN.com’s Luke Hughes and Doug Kyed think Romo deserves a starting job in the NFL, and maybe even for the Cowboys, but that they money he’s being guaranteed is just way too much.

On this week’s episode of theĀ Gunslingers Podcast, Hughes and Kyed discuss Romo’s new contract and how it could impact the Cowboys’ future plans. They also dive into the Chiefs’ running a smokescreen with Geno Smith, the best available free agents and Sebastian Vollmer‘s new contract.
