Jim Harbaugh Says About Undrafted Free Agent Lawrence Okoye, ‘Our Creator Created a Beautiful Man’

Lawrence OkoyeJim Harbaugh praised all of his team’s draft picks on NFL Network over the weekend, and he had good reason to — the San Francisco 49ers pulled in an impressive haul this year.

But the highest praise he dished out was to a player that went undrafted during the weekend festivities. Lawrence Okoye is a British rugby player turned discus thrower, but Harbaugh compared him to the Greek god of beauty and desire. Okoye has no previous football experience, but he impressed scouts during the predraft process with his size and athleticism. Okoye is 6-foot-6, 308 pounds and he ran a 4.78 40-yard dash.

“He’s just an Adonis,” Harbaugh told the San Francisco Gate. “Just a great physical specimen of a man. I can think of some other adjectives. Our Creator created a beautiful man.”

Tell us how you really feel, Jim. You could say that Harbaugh was downright smitten with Okoye, who is likely projected to learn the five-technique defensive end spot with the 49ers. He holds the British discus throwing record at 68.24 meters, but finished just 12th in the London Olympics with a 61.03 meter toss.

The 21-year-old further impressed at the Super Regional Combine held in Dallas, Texas, by leaping 35 inches in the vertical jump and 10-foot-5 in the broad jump. He was expected to go anywhere from the sixth round to undrafted.

He’ll have some competition to even make San Francisco’s roster. In the draft, they added safety Eric Reid from LSU, Florida State defensive end Tank Carradine, tight end Vance McDonald of Rice, Auburn defensive end Corey Lemonier, wideout Quinton Patton of Louisiana Tech, South Carolina running back Marcus Lattimore, defensive end Quinton Dial of Alabama, Florida State linebacker Nick Moody, South Florida quarterback/athlete B.J. Daniels, offensive tackle Carter Bykowski of Iowa State and Rutgers cornerback Marcus Cooper.

They added six undrafted players including Okoye, according to NEPatriotsDraft.com. Offensive lineman Luke Marquardt of Azuza-Pacific, quarterback/athlete MarQuies Gray of Minnesota, Michigan offensive lineman Patrick Omameh, UCLA longsnapper Kevin McDermott and Utah State wide receiver Chuck Jacobs all reportedly signed on.
