John Lackey Sent to Disabled List, Stephen Drew Activated as Part of Busy Day for Red Sox

John LackeyThe Red Sox were off Tuesday, but they’ll get back to work Wednesday night on a day where the front office certainly was busy. The club announced a flurry of roster moves Wednesday afternoon.

Most notably was that starting pitcher John Lackey was sent to the 15-day disabled list. Lackey left Saturday’s start in Toronto with a biceps injury. Lackey and the club were hopeful that a DL trip could be avoided, but that was wishful thinking apparently. The move is retroactive to April 7.

The Sox called up right-handed pitcher Alex Wilson from Pawtucket to fill Lackey’s spot on the 25-man roster. Wilson, the club’s minor league pitcher of the year in 2011, has given up three runs in 2 2/3 innings this season with Pawtucket.

Shortstop Stephen Drew has been activated as well. He was taken off the seven-day concussion disabled list, and he’s expected to make his Red Sox debut Wednesday night against the Orioles. Drew suffered a concussion when he was hit in the head with a pitch on March 7 that caused him to miss most of spring training.

To make room for Drew on the 25-man, the Sox had to send down shortstop Jose Iglesias to Pawtucket. The slick-fielding shortstop had been a pleasant surprise in the early going. The 23-year-old was hitting .450 (9-for-20) to begin the year with the big club.
