Joni Pitkanen Collides Into End Boards Against Capitals, Leaves Ice on Stretcher (Video)

Days after Louisville’s Kevin Ware suffered a broken leg in the Elite Eight, a player from a different sport went down with a leg injury of his own after an incidental collision Tuesday night.

Joni Pitkanen, a Carolina defenseman, raced after a loose puck with Capitals forward Troy Brouwer in an attempt to avoid an icing call. Though no contact was made between the two skaters, Pitkanen crushed his legs into the boards, and was carried off the ice on a stretcher after laying in agonizing pain for some time.
