The Dolphins were all set to pick TCU wide receiver Josh Boyce with the No. 104 overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but the Patriots pulled the rug out from under Miami.
Boyce told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that the Dolphins had called to say they were taking him with their first pick in the fourth round. Soon after he got off the phone with Miami, the Patriots came calling. New England took Boyce No. 102 overall.
The former Horned Frogs wideout is a natural fit for the Patriots. Boyce ran an unofficial 4.34-second 40-yard dash (the official time was 4.38 seconds, but the unofficial times are typically more accurate to what NFL teams have), 6.68-second three-cone drill and 4.10-second short shuttle at this year’s NFL scouting combine — all on a broken toe.
It will be interesting to follow the career paths of Boyce and the player that Miami wound up taking No. 104, Florida linebacker Jelani Jenkins, to see who got the better end of the theft. Boyce has a chance to get solid playing time in New England this year with a shallow depth chart at wide receiver.
