Rays Manager Joe Maddon Puts Gong in Tropicana Field, Functionality and Use Still Unclear

SS GongWhen the Tampa Bay Rays take the field at home, the loudspeakers blare the rock classic “Bang a Gong (Get it On)” by T-Rex.

Rays general manager Joe Maddon recently heard the song and liked it so much that he wanted it to represent his team at Tropicana Field.

Then he took it a step further. Maddon had a gong installed within the ballpark, and had the team hire someone to bang it. The banger (?) dresses in a costume that combines Greek, Roman and Scottish traditions — which includes a plaid kilt, metal armor and leather gladiator boots.

Between the gong and the live stingrays swimming in a tank in center field, Tropicana Field has pretty good live entertainment.

Uses for the gong remain unclear, however, but the possibilities are endless.
